We can remember the past. We can imagine the future. But what happens when we remember a future that we imagined in the past? When we remember an unfulfilled aspiration, for example? Or when we remember the promises of progress? We can fall into regret, or we can find sap to renew our hopes. Either way, we know what happened next and we can learn a lot from it. If the future today is not what it used to be, we can still draw it. The book lies between sociology and cultural studies, offering an original perspective: individual and generational stories, literature and cinema are called upon to support the discourse so that everyone can compare their own experience, navigating with the author between nostalgia, hope and reflection.
PAOLO JEDLOWSKI - A graduate in Philosophy from the State University of Milan, he studied Sociology in Italy and the United States. He is currently Professor of Sociology at the University of Calabria, where he also taught from 1992 to 2004. He has also taught Sociology at the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Naples "L'Orientale" and Sociology of Communication at the University of Italian Switzerland.
He works on the sociology of culture, social theory, the sociology of everyday life and the history of sociology. He has been national coordinator of the "Everyday life" section of the Italian Association of Sociology (AIS). At the University of Calabria he founded and directs Ossidiana, Observatory on cultural processes and everyday life. He is the author of several books on collective memory and contemporary experience and of research on communication in everyday life. In addition to publishing some sociological classics (Maurice Halbwachs, Peter Berger, Georg Simmel and Alfred Schutz), he has edited a dictionary of the social sciences and published two manuals on the history of sociological thought.
