The project "Development pathway for teachers to facilitate the learning of Transversal Competences and for Orientation (PCTO)", intended for twenty teachers of the Institute as alternating school-work tutors, arose from the need to provide teaching staff with a set of skills necessary for the assessment of transversal competences, made compulsory by the publication of the Ministry of Education Guidelines (2019).
In particular, the teachers' need was to learn how to identify transversal competences, observe them in the students' actions, in order to facilitate their learning and assess it.
The ISMO training staff aimed at conveying to the participants the message that it is already possible to create opportunities for learning soft skills in daily teaching, through the use of tools and methodologies to be integrated in the classic classroom lesson (project work, team working, public speaking, research...). In order to do this, a maieutic, participative and pragmatic approach was adopted, trying to stimulate participants from the outset to share what transversal competences were for them, what the underlying skills were, how to observe them. Participants were invited in each meeting to work in small groups to facilitate comparison and discussion.
The differences between teaching and learning were clarified, distinguishing their respective fields of application and stimulating everyone to reflect on their own, perhaps unexpressed, potential, through the construction of their own reference model made up of competences and related skills. The aim of the project was not only to renew learning methods, but also to give a new look to the role of the teacher, seen as a facilitator of relational skills, which are indispensable both in studies and in the workplace.
Objectives achieved
The project aimed to accompany the group of PCTO tutor teachers in becoming aware of their (new) role as facilitators of learning transversal competences. The project also supported the teaching group in identifying transversal competences in order to observe them in everyday teaching activities, facilitating learning through different methodologies to be integrated with traditional teaching methods.
Finally, teachers were provided with a criterion for assessing students' learning in terms of transversal skills and their application.
Project value proposition
The project stimulated the group of participants to think about soft skills, especially their sensitivity in recognising them and facilitating their learning.
This was achieved by clarifying to teachers how to integrate these competences in the classic forms of teaching practised in everyday life, experimenting with new learning methodologies, closer to the needs of training.
