Until ten thousand years ago, the prevailing theory was that writing would disappear and be replaced by orality. Writing was not given much weight and was thought to be an old technology destined to disappear.
For example, in 2001: A Space Odyssey, people do not write but talk to the big computer on board, the big brain talks, not writes. M. Mc Luhan hypothesised a return to 'warm' communication.
13 years after the first PCs were introduced, the explosion of writing was not foreseen. Writing was considered old. The opposite happened. For many years it was said that the videophone would take off, but it did not, and the evolution has been of telephones that are more and more like PCs, which are places of writing.
